1 Nephi 18:3,5

Revelation for that which is our stewardship:

Throughout 1st Nephi, it can be confusing as to whom is really the spiritual leader of this small society. Obviously Nephi is a prophet as well as Lehi and received many revelations throughout the chapters. Even though Nephi seems to often defer to Lehi (1 Nephi 16:23), what is the different between them? They both talk to the Lord. They both receive revelation.

There is a simple distinction that can minimize confusion. Nephi never got a revelation for anyone but himself. Yes, his communications with the Lord had impact on the group, but he was never told, "Here is what everyone should do". Instead he was told "Here is what YOU should do."

Verses 3 and 5 in chapter 18 illustrate the point. In verse 3 Nephi continues to learn many great things from the Lord, most specifically to do with his responsibilities of building the boat. Then, in verse 5, Lehi receives the revelation that it is time for all (including Nephi) to go down into the ship.

Even if the extent of our stewardship is just our own lives, it is possible to qualify for direct revelation from the Lord. Even revelations on the level Nephi saw.

1 Nephi 17:3,13

There is an interesting principle here of the pattern to successfully accomplish difficult commandments. We have to take the leap of faith and get to work, even not knowing how we can accomplish the commandment. THEN God will show us the way, lead us, strengthen us and make it possible for us to achieve.

1 Nephi 10:17-19

Revelation through the power of the Holy Ghost

So often, we only think of the Holy Ghost as one that will help us see the truth, help us to know. What we often forget is that it is by the power of the Holy Ghost that all the prophets, from the beginning of time, have seen visions and have heard the Word of God.

Does it mean that anyone can see visions? I dont know. What I know is the gift of the Holy Ghost is "the gift of God unto all those who diligently seek him"... "if it so be that they repent and come unto him."

"... and the mysteries of God shall be unfolded unto them, by the power of the Holy Ghost..."

We have an opportunity in this life. We may not have visions of the heavens and angels, but we can have a testament of our savior Jesus Christ that is stronger than just a feeling in our heart. It will most likely start there, but if we really want to see it is possible for our eyes to be opened, and see.
